MAC Cosmetics Limited Edition Photographs By Helmut Newton

When this box of goodies landed on my doorstep, I legit, did a cartwheel of happiness. Everything about this collaboration between MAC Cosmetics and Helmut Newton was on point. The packaging was beautiful as it features some of Helmut Newton’s famous photography, and the makeup collection itself is comprised of a perfect set of flattering colours for fall. I immediately dug in and wore one of the Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colours to a gala as it was P-E-R-F-E-C-T. So, allow me to get my review on.

Before we get started though, a little on Helmut Newton…

One of my favourite Helmut Newton photographs. David Bowie by Helmut Newton, 1982

Helmut Newton was a German photographer known for his moody and erotic black and white photos of women. His photographs were a mainstay of popular magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair, and his aesthetic was so beautiful and unique that they were widely imitated, and continue to be even today.

MAC’s collection is sexy and moody, just like Mr. Newton’s photographs. This limited edition features wine-coloured and scarlet lip colours, nail polishes in dark, dramatic shades and sultry eyeshadows reminiscent of the photographer’s signature style.

Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours

Let me start by saying that MAC hit it out of the park with this product. They are extremely matte, as promised, highly pigmented – the colour pay-off is insane, and the colours in this collection are stunning. I like the applicator that is wide enough for my full lips, yet ergonomic enough for anyone to use. The diamond-shaped applicator allows for easy and precise application too. I’m thinking this is pretty much the perfect product. I’m a total fan. For your reference, I wore the High Heels Liquid Lipcolour and reviewed this collection in my latest YouTube video:

Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in High Heels

High Heels is scarlet. Like, SCARLET. It’s a true and perfect red with orange undertones. I wore this and wow!!! Did it ever pop on my skin tone! What I love about these liquid lip colours is that a little goes a long way (no need to apply a ton to get that perfect colour as shown in the tube), and they stay put.  They are not going anywhere. I applied High Heels in the early afternoon, and it was still there six hours later.

Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour in Self-Portrait

Self-Portrait is a gorgeous plummy-purple. I love that it isn’t too dark and “charcoal-ish”. I found it very flattering on my skin tone and since receiving it, I have worn it a ton. I really feel that this shade of wine would be easy to wear on any skin tone.

Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in Chateau M

Chateau M is a deep red colour that speaks directly to my beauty blogger soul. The colour is easy to wear if you are snow white to deepest dark chocolate in colour. Perfect for Valentine’s Day and very reminiscent of something Elizabeth Taylor or Ava Gardner would wear during the heyday of Old Hollywood glamour.

Point ‘N’ Shoot Eye Shadow x 4 in (clockwise from top left) “Real Fantasy”, “Hard Currency”, “Influential” and “Point’N’ Shoot”.

The Point ‘N’ Shoot Eye Shadow x 4 is an easy to wear eyeshadow quad featuring neutral shades of camel, “greige” (greyish beige), brown and black. The colours are Real Fantasy (camel), Hard Currency (greige), Influential (brown) and Point ‘N’ Shoot (black).  In true MAC form, the eyeshadows are lovely with their finely milled quality and highly pigmented colour pay-off. I am very partial to Influential which is a lovely, matte greige colour that I feel is easy to wear with any outfit and complements most skin tones. Point ‘N’ Shoot is a deep, black perfect for smoky eyes. Wet your stiff, angled brush and dip into Point ‘N’ Shoot and it makes for a perfect smudgy eyeliner too.

Real Fantasy is a perfect highlight shade for the brow bone and Currency is perfect washed over eyelids. I’m going to blast through this quad in no time.

MAC Nail Lacquer in Call Time, Monte Carlo and Berlin

Now, for the nail polishes! Unfortunately, I did not have time to swatch them, but I did try out Call Time (greige colour) on a few of my fingers quickly. MAC’s nail polishes have come a long way over the past several years. They are no longer prone to chipping and they apply smoothly, evenly and Call Time was thick enough to provide the true colour with two coats. The polish dries with a nice, shiny finish. Call Time in particular is fresh, modern, and straight up my alley.

Berlin, a dark plum/wine shade, is perfect for fall. I’m a sucker for dark shades like these and frankly wear them all year round. This colour is richly pigmented and you are good with two coats.  It’s not ultra dark like OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark or Chanel’s Vamp/Rouge Noir per se…but it has a lovely wine tone that is very flattering that provides a nice, feminine depth.

Monte Carlo on the other hand is a hot, awesome red that I love! It’s super eye-catching and I’ll be rocking this with all black outfits this fall and winter. I also bought a great rose-coloured dress and Monte Carlo is the perfect red to add that “power clashing, je ne sais quoi” to my outfit. Seriously love this scarlet stunner.

This limited edition line will be available online this October 27, 2016, and will be available in-store November 3 through December 15, 2016. Grab yourself a few treats and channel some inner Old Hollywood glamour à la Helmut Newton!
