Ok. I’m going to give you some real talk here, I’m big on working out and fitness in general, but I let it slip severely this year. I love to run and cycle, but was always short on time to do so. Going to my regular gym was uninspiring, so I pretty much stopped working out. I eat pretty carefully though, so my weight was stable.
Then Europe hit. I was drinking daily and eating out constantly. In Spain, we were eating tons and then going straight to bed! I would wake up still full and slowly felt grosser and grosser as the days passed. I vowed to get my fitness regime back on track once I got home.
Upon returning, I weighed myself and was shocked to discover that I had gained 10lbs. TEN POUNDS!! That a lot of Iberico ham, rosé and fish & chips. I was down about it too. A bunch of my cute clothes no longer fit. My pants felt like they were cutting off the circulation to my head and I kinda hit “rock bottom” when even my shoes felt tight! Lol- omg.
Putting A Weight Loss Plan In Motion
I started running again and lost about 3lbs. in two weeks. The other 7lbs though just wouldn’t budge. I cleaned up my diet too…but I knew I needed a little help.
Personal training was always popping into my head. I missed the days when I worked out with a knowledgeable trainer who pushed me (safely) beyond my weaknesses. I got stuck in a rut of doing the same old exercises at the gym and working out was no longer fun. In comes Premium Performance to the rescue.
Dave Fontaine, co-founder of Premium Performance, invited me to his gym to try it out. When I got there, I was stunned. IT IS GORGEOUS! Light, bright and airy, it felt welcoming and frankly, fun! It was bustling but not too busy, so you could breathe and move around freely. The people working out there all seemed to know each other too – joking around between sets. The atmosphere was seriously warm and didn’t feel at all like the dungeon I was used to working out in.
Dave is a sweet guy too. Easy to smile, he immediately puts you at ease. I once had a hulk of a personal trainer who never smiled and took things a little too seriously. He was all poached chicken breast and broccoli too. Ugh. I knew instantly upon meeting Dave that this would be a good fit. Dave has been training most of his life, therefore fitness is second nature to him. A regular at the gym since he was 14 years old, he always new that this would be a large part of his life.
Playing sports at the competitive level, Dave knew the importance of physical preparation. He soon learned that he actually liked training for sports more than the sport itself. Fast forward a few years later, Dave met his business partner Paul and fulfilled his dream to open the most personalized fitness centre in Ottawa. The rest is history.
Developing My Personal Training And Nutrition Plan
Dave and I sat down and I whined to him about how lax I’d gotten about fitness. I told him of the goals I wanted to reach – mainly losing 10lbs and getting some abs, dammit!
Dave listened to me patiently and told me of how his training regimen is built on science and solid strength training. He was confident that I could build solid muscle and burn fat without having to run my little legs off. Don’t worry though – running is a major stress reliever for me and I won’t be cutting that out!
I really wanted to look lean and strong, and judging by his clientèle, he could help me achieve my goals with a tailored, personalized training plan. he explained “Biosignature” to me, which is essentially a non-invasive fat-loss method based on hormonal imbalances.
The Hard Truth – Body Fat And Weight
Dave took my measurements for Biosignature and weight. Before Spain, I was a lean, mean 127lbs. I now weigh 135.8lbs, 109.9lbs of which is lean mass. This means that I have 22.7% body fat which puts me in the “normal range”.
After taking my BMI measurements with a calipre, Dave knew instantly that I didn’t sleep well (truth), had a sweet tooth (guilty as charged) and drank maybe a little more than I should (hangs head in shame). Based on this, he provided me with a nutrition plan to lose the weight safely without feeling deprived. I was majorly impressed with his careful explanation of each step of this fitness journey.
Something else that he mentioned is that you should indulge a little! Don’t be too hard on yourself and if your body is craving something, have some in moderation. I can get behind that! Kit Kat fo’ life!
Osteopathy At Premium Performance
Another aspect that impressed me about Premium Performance is Meaghan, their on-site osteopath. When I went for my first session with her she could see how out of balance I was – how I held a ton of tension in my neck and back. Makes sense. I sit at a desk all day and rarely stretch (usually only after running).
She worked my tired, stiff muscles and gave me a massage that made me feel like I had died and gone to heaven. Honestly, I felt like a bowl of mush when I climbed into my car, and drove home in a state of bliss, sans road rage.
So far, I’ve completed two weeks’ worth of personal training with Dave and I’m starting to see results. I plan on documenting my fitness journey over the coming months and sharing my progress with you all. For the first time in a long time, I’m super excited to be weight-training and look forward to achieving my results and being the most fit, best Dom I can be.
If you are looking to start a fitness journey in a fun, welcoming atmosphere, with no pressure from pushy people, I encourage you to check out Premium Performance. Located in lively Hintonburg, Ottawa, this gym has everything you need to get in the best shape of your life!
