Oscars 2016: Best & Worst Dressed

As we all know, this year’s Oscars Award Show was “interesting”. With the uproar over the lack of diversity of nominees (#OscarsSoWhite), to the frankly, quite boring selection of movies for Best Picture, I didn’t really plan on watching.

I couldn’t help but tune in though at 11:30pm, just to see my boyfriend Leonardo DiCaprio win his much-deserved Oscar. In actuality, I cheered so loud when he won that I woke up my husband. Hey! LEO DESERVED IT!

Generally, I watch the Oscars only for the fashion.  I PVR the first couple of hours to see the red carpet action, then slip into a coma thanks to the countless boring speeches and categories that are too dry to watch (“Best Short Subject, Two Reel” – what? “Best Sound Mixing”? Zzzzzz).

I’ve compiled a list of my best and worst fashion picks for this year’s Oscars. Some of the dresses are truly works of art, the others are sad reminders that money cannot buy style.

Here goes – winners for Best Dressed:

Leonardo – my boyfriend, of course.   My top honour goes to Leo and his perfectly tailored Armani tux.  With its true black colour, peak lapel and slim fit, he looks like a bespoke gentleman. Bravo!

Yasssss, honey!!

I LOVE THIS DRESS. I gasped when I saw it, but then again, I’m a sucker for candy-coloured dresses that take weeks to make by hand and cost tens of thousands of dollars. A true masterpiece by Armani Privé. Cate Blanchett can officially do no wrong in my style book.

Lady Gaga – you look gorgeous. Well done, Brandon Maxwell! Business in the front, elegance and class in the back!

Priyanka Chopra…I have no words. This is just too beautiful.  Zuhair Murad is a genius. Very elegant, very classy. Love everything about this beautiful look on this beautiful lady.

Love this interesting cut and fit of this Valentino Haute Couture gem on Olivia Wilde. I also love the sparkling Art Deco-inspired choker!

I am in love with this orange Stella McCartney dress on Olivia Munn. It flatters her wonderfully. Wow!

Golden, snake-print gorgeousness by Tom Ford on Margot Robbie.  I actually think it washes her out, but it would amazing on me!

Love this weird and wonderful Gucci tux on Jared Leto…and check out the fantastic flower neck tie! LOVE!

Jared Leto - Gucci

Sexy and stunning. The colour is beyond.  Incredible. Saoirse Ronan looks stunning in this Calvin Klein number.

I absolutely love this off-white design masterpiece on Rooney Mara. A Givenchy Haute Couture gem.

…and now for Worst Dressed! BLECH!

Poor Whoopi.  She looks like she hates this dress which just happens to be modelled after the historic design worn by Bette Davis in All About Eve.  Her face screams “Can I go change now?” Check out the scary octopus bracelet too.

Orlando James’s tuxedo blazer defies all common sense, rhyme and reason. Tragic.

The most beautiful garbage bag I have ever seen.  Enough said. Poor Kate Winslet and shame on you, Ralph Lauren!

Lily Cole’s silver Vivienne Westwood dress is made entirely from recycled plastic bottles, which probably explains why it looks like a crumpled mess. Her shoes are fantastic though.

To me, this Versace dress on Kerry Washington looks poorly made.  The leather bust is ok and quite figure-flattering, but the strange, black leather half-moons really take away from the white skirt. Kerry Washington does look amazing though, especially after having her baby last year.

I hate everything about poor Alicia Vikander’s Louis Vuitton number. It’s a weird shade of yellow, the silvery detail is odd, the puffball, balloon-skirt hem is ridiculous, I don’t like her hair…it’s Dullsville.  It’s too bad..she’s so pretty with lovely skin tone.

Oh noooooo. Nooooo, no, no, no, no. Heidi Klum, I am officially convinced that you have no style. You need help, my love. Too pretty to look this “Mrs. Roper”. A living, breathing, cotton candy disaster.

Cate Blanchett always looks stunning, I love seeing her at red carpets. Rooney Mara was so elegant and true to her style!
Glad I’m not the only one who didn’t like Alicia Vikander’s look, I hate puffball dresses.

Yep – totally with you. That yellow colour is awful, I hate the silver detail and the whole puffball mullet look is atrocious. Cate is a complete vision. Girl crush!

  2. February 29, 2016 / 12:09 pm

I agree with all of your picks. Kerry Washington’s dress had the potential to be cute, but something about it looks very amateur. I was disappointed in Alicia Vikander especially since I loved the LV dress she wore at the SAGs. And she stole my boyfriend in my head.

    • February 29, 2016 / 2:26 pm

HAHAHAHA! OMG! Yeah – I agree! Alicia normally looks so stunning…that LV on her was such a disappointment! Maybe if it was pale blue or pale pink…or a totally difference dress? LOL! And those skinny, black half-moon things on Kerry Washington’s dress just ruin it completely. It fits beautifully otherwise.

  3. February 29, 2016 / 12:13 pm

I agree, Cate Blanchett can do no wrong! She’s a VISION in that dress.
    Lady Gaga’s outfit… I didn’t HATE it, which is a good thing.
Saoirse Ronan’s dress looked stunning but I didn’t care for her makeup.
Rooney Mara always looks so SEVERE… even with a lacey number.
Yes Kerry Washington could do SO much better! That weird black belt design thing was so odd.
And yesssss I didn’t care for Alicia Vikander’s dress either. She’s a lovely lady and the dress was so weird.
OMG I haven’t seen Heidi Klum’s dress until now! LMAO, fire her stylist pronto!
Everyone is gushing over Charlize Theron’s red dress but I didn’t love it – looked shapeless.

    • February 29, 2016 / 2:24 pm

I didn’t like Charlize’s dress at all. I thought about including it, but I thought it was ill-fitting and boring…and there were worse out there to feature. LOL! Hmm – you didn’t like Saoirse’s makeup? Was it the heavy, smoky eye? Yeah – Kerry’s dress was such a shame! I wonder what went through her head when she picked that! Her other dress options must have been atrocious for her to settle on that one. As for Rooney Mara, I agree…but she has such a severe face and demeanor about her, that I feel she carries of these unique styles well. I think the dress would have been even better if there was no over-played cut out. xo

      • February 29, 2016 / 4:45 pm

I feel like the makeup wore Saoirse rather than the other way around. I didn’t see a lot of great makeup looks last night though.

  4. February 29, 2016 / 1:47 pm

I loved Cate Blanchett’s dress too! Orlando’s blazer is laughable! I think that was actually a good outfit day for Whoopi compared to what she usually looks like.

  5. February 29, 2016 / 2:17 pm

I think Heidi Klum and Kerry Washington’s outfits look alright, but definitely not as pretty as the others on the best dressed list. I honestly hate Lady Gaga’s outfit, though, it looks so dumpy and unflattering on her! Cate Blanchett, Margot Robbie, Priyanka Chopra, and Stella McCartney were my favourites by far.

    • February 29, 2016 / 2:20 pm

Ok – I have to admit, the more I look at Heidi Klum’s dress, the more it’s growing on me. I truly think Kerry Washington’s dress is horrible. Awful. Thanks for reading! LOL!

  6. February 29, 2016 / 2:36 pm

Despite not having cable to watch the Oscars with and, honestly, not ebing enough of a movie buff to really get anything out of it, I still enjoyed the event this year without ever having to turn on the TV! Thank god for Snapchat, right?

Firstly OH MY GOD LEO FINALLY WON. I can guarantee Tumblr is imploding as I type this. if it hasn’t already.

Gaga was definitely hands down my absolute favorite. I love love love the jumpsuit with some gorgeous class thrown in with that train. All the enjoyment of both gowns and pants in one super classy look.

Cate Blanchett is always a goddess but that blue gown was especially stunning. It’s literally the perfect piece for transitional weather, too. A nice wintry blue and flowers everywhere for spring. It’s perfect.

I definitely agree with Klum. I did. not. like. that. dress. like at all. ugh.

    xoxo,
    Dannie

Haha Dannie! Well said! I was so thrilled for Leo, thought Gaga looked absolutely beautiful (I find she looks really different too – did she have work done, same with Olivia Munn?), and I couldn’t get over Cate Blanchett’s dress. Wow – what a stunner. Poor Heidi Klum. Full stop. LOL! xoxo

  7. February 29, 2016 / 4:48 pm

My favorite Oscars 2016 dress is Cate Blanchett’s, though I missed half of the show.

  8. February 29, 2016 / 4:55 pm

I thought Olivia Wilde’s dress didn’t fit her nice at all !!!
What was Heidi Klum thinking 🙁 Great pics xo’s

  9. February 29, 2016 / 8:12 pm

I don’t know much about contemporary style… so I will try to make a habit of stopping back in here more frequently… to learn more! All the colorful outfits from the Oscars! Wow – Glad Leonardo won! He deserves it!

  10. March 1, 2016 / 2:25 am

I don’t know… I actually kind of like Kerry Washington’s dress. I love the colours and the leather looks really nice. Everyone to their own opinion, I guess! I also loved some of your favourites, though, so I guess we’re kind of even?! XD Actually, no, I think you officially hate me now. Oh well. It was good while it lasted… XD

HATSY! I don’t hate you! LOL! What a ridiculous thing to write! LOL! We can disagree on dresses without that sort of emotion! LOL! Thanks for reading! xo

  11. March 1, 2016 / 11:16 am

I went to an awards ceremony once, thinking it would be all glam. It was 90% boring.
I have to disagree, I quite like Orlando James’s tic jacket. Nice to see men with a bit of pizazz xx

    • March 1, 2016 / 4:44 pm

Oh no! I would have thought that maybe attending in person would be more fun. Now that I think about it, I bet all of those stars were dying having to sit for what seemed like 400 straight hours. I was sad for Orlando – he’s so handsome…and that jacket looked like something Don Cornelius would wear to host Soul Train! But you’re right…it is refreshing to see something fun on the red carpet! xo

  12. March 2, 2016 / 5:00 pm

Giiiiirl you should’ve seen my reaction after chris Rock’s speech ! I was like ” whoa this might be really awkward for white people in the audience ” and finally LEO ! my bae! my favorite dress was Saoirse Ronan ! she looked Gorgeous

    • March 2, 2016 / 9:08 pm

Hahaha! I agree with you 1,000,000%!!! Thanks for reading! xoxoxo

  13. March 4, 2016 / 8:56 pm

As I was reading this post I was hoping you would mention Heidi’s horrific dress!!!! Of late, she hasn’t been doing well on the red carpet at all. I was also very much disappointed in Kerry Washington’s dress. A lot of people seemed to like it but it was a thumbs down from me…I’m glad I’m not the only one that wasn’t keen on that look.
Now Lady Gaga???looked absolutely stunning! Hair, makeup, attire and jewellery was perfection!!!!

  14. March 10, 2016 / 9:31 pm

    Owh, Priyanka definitely killed it!

  15. March 12, 2016 / 8:35 pm

Someone please save Tilda from the black velvet garbage bags holding her body hostage. She posed like this all night long, and you probably thought it was to show off that bit of bling on her wrist. But really, she was trying to find the zipper once she saw everyone’s faces.
