Ok – I will admit, this isn’t much of a Halloween costume, but this is basically the look I’m rocking for All Hallow’s Eve. Thanks to my crazy life, I couldn’t pull together a full-fledged costume, but I did want to look a little dark, moody and mysterious for my favourite time of year.
That got me to thinking about a few of the 2018 trends that could easily be turned into great Day of The Dead costumes, like the abundance of great faux leather pieces out there.
WHAT I’M WEARING
Chunky Black Sweater – Shein ($20!!) | Faux Leather Skirt – Shein (similar) | Sock Boots – Aldo (similar here) | Bag – Borrowed from a dear friend
This year, I was invited to a couple of costume parties, but decided to lay low. I will be heading out for Halloween to hang out with my sister and thought this little leather skirt that’s “so hot right now”, paired with a chunky knit sweater would be a stylish option. The Addams Family is one of my favourite movies and I have already been Wednesday Addams a handful of times, so I thought I’d try being her stylishly dark mother Morticia this year. Funny how I apparently always look like a black version of Morticia. *shrugs…doesn’t mind at all*
I call this particular look “Modern Day Morticia”. The all-black styling, blood red lips and pin straight black hair balances out Morticia’s formal look. Teetering around in pumps and a skintight dress sounded exhausting, and I was tired of paying $100 for cheap costumes I’d never wear again. This look allows me to move, look chic and best of all, can be worn again outside of any Halloween party.
Let’s say you are going for the Modern Day Morticia – choose pieces that can be paired with other things in your closet. So far, this little skirt has been worn with a white blouse and a buffalo-check flannel shirt. For an upcoming event, I’ll be re-wearing this skirt but adding pumps, opaque black tights, a gold turtleneck for a fun pop of colour and a shearling-trimmed denim jacket achieve a fun, casual look.
So, I hope all you kids have a fun-filled Halloween this year! Did you take inspiration from the runways for your costume? If so, let me know in the comments!
