So, I’m at the grocery store and the guy standing in line behind me catches my eye…and not in a good way. He is wearing grey track pants that look about 10 sizes too big. There there is a giant hole at the crotch and he’s paired these pants with a sad maroon t-shirt that is stained with what looks like chocolate. He looks confident…like he’s God’s gift to the world.
That sort of confidence I admire. I had to laugh a little as he gave me a “How you doin’??” sort of look. I paid for my extra large bag of Mini Eggs and ran out of there.
Athleisure is here to stay, whether you like it or not. And what’s there not to like? Before you throw your fists up into the air and pump them joyously at the fact that I’m telling you to wear your leggings to the gym then out to a Michelin-starred restaurant, let’s take a breath.
Athleisure is best pulled off with a hefty dose of balance. After all, athleisure can go from looking like Bella Hadid walking the runway in Adidas track pants to Ben Affleck in Good Will Hunting fast…real fast.
As I said, the key with athleisure is balance. A little Sporty Spice here, and little polished put-togetherness there…and your golden. Here are my best tips to help you pull off athleisure with class!
Do Opt For Polished Track Pants
I got these Felicia Pants at Lolë, my favourite spot for athletic wear. Lolë is great because they offer a whole range of clothing for working out to grabbing groceries to brunch with friends. And brunch with my hubby is exactly where I wore these polished track pants that warm winter day.
They are comfy yet polished and transition so well from my gym to one of our favourite restaurants.

Don’t Do The Head-To-Toe Track Suit
No Juicy Couture velvet tracksuits. No head-to-toe splash pant suits à la Ben Affleck circa Good Will Hunting. Pair either an awesome track jacket with jeans or track pants with a great chunky sweater, body suit, whatever. Just please…head-to-toe is too much. You’re not “2001 Paris Hilton”.
Don’t Wear Your Athleisure To A Gala
Athleisure is not the place for a wedding (omg), a gala or some other special event. Stick to brunch, lunch, hitting up the grocery store or walking your dog pal.
Do Think “Fitted”
Try not to go too baggy. Fitted athleisure pieces look more polished and fresh, and less sloppy or messy.
Don’t Reach For Those Heels
Please…argh…NO HEELS. No strappy sandals or wedge sneakers. All of these scream “I’m trying too hard”. Really cool trainers that are CLEAN and awesome work best with this look, as do clean flats.
