How To Achieve Perfect Curls – Curl Keeper Review

Meet Erika. Erika, a vegan and healthy living enthusiast, just happens to be one of my beautiful sisters. A complete free spirit and consummate middle child (easy-going, peace-making, totally open-minded and a great listener), decided to go “natural” about three years ago. By “natural”,  I mean she quit hair relaxers for good.

Sick of the maintenance that comes with relaxers such as the somewhat painful process, dry scalp that relaxing causes and breakage, she thought it was high time to quit fighting her hair and embrace its natural texture. To her surprise, her natural hair was uber curly and fabulous and she promises to never look back.

While Erika has found a hair care regimen that really works for her, I thought I would introduce her to Curl Keeper, a fantastic line of water-based products which completely eliminates frizz, the curlista’s dreaded nemesis.

I attended the launch of Curl Keeper at Trade Secrets and learned a lot from their product knowledge session. Jonathan Torch, Curl Keeper’s “Master of The Curl” explained to us that controlling curly hair should be stress-free. He discovered that the pH balance of curly hair was key to controlling frizz and believes that beautiful, defined curls should have a pH of 4.5-5.5. All Curl Keeper products are acid-balanced to maintain the pH of healthy hair, resulting in great shine and manageability.

Curl Keeper, as mentioned, is totally water-based which greatly reduces product build-up. In addition, when using Curl Keeper, your curly style will last for days as the formual reactivates with water. Best of all, its fantastic for combatting frizz in humid weather conditions. Simply re-wet your hair with water in between shampoos to re-activate your curls.  YASSSSSS, honey!!

Erika was delighted with the results which is huge as my sissy takes her haircare hella seriously. Here is a video of how we used Curl Keeper in her hair to produce gorgeous, defined curls:

Curl Keeper™ Original

I used Curl Keeper Original in Erika’s hair. First of all, it smells amazing. Light and fruity, it smells like a berry smoothie. Secondly, it had a really nice slip in the hair, meaning that when applied, it made the hair incredibly silky and smooth. We also noticed that it was very detangling – an unexpectedly great treat!

After application, Erika’s hair was extremely shiny and soft. She was sold instantly. Best of all, it didn’t make her hair crusty or hard, and the effects lasted for days. You won’t need to worry about any product buildup either. Completely silicone-free, it washed out very cleanly.

Side note: When using Curl Keeper, be generous. Do not shy away from using a lot of this product in your hair to achieve curly awesomeness. Curl Keeper is sold in three sizes, the biggest being the one litre bottle. I highly suggest you buy the one-litre bottle if you are curly haired.

I have wavy hair, and I used about a handful in my own hair and was delighted with the results. My hair dried to a beachy, sexy finish. Loved the shine and how soft it felt, and it was great to not have to use the flat iron after using this product. I’ll definitely be putting Curl Keeper Original to good use this summer to eliminate heat damage.

Curl Keeper Tames Textured Hair

We LOVED this product. It has amazing detangling properties and made our hair super soft. As with each Curl Keeper product, it greatly defined curls allowing for soft, bouncy hairdos and amazing shine.  Like Curl Keeper Original, it promises to work very effectively in humid weather and is reactivated with water.

Curl Keeper Tames Textured Hair is particularly great for twisting your hair into bantu knots and allowing for amazing twist-out dos. I achieved the most amazing pin curls using this product. Some ladies with relaxed hair experience breakage with high-manipualtion hairdos, but this product will greatly cut down on that as it eliminates tangles and allows for combs and fingers to glide through hair effortlessly.

Curl Keeper 30 Second Detangler 

This product is AMAZING. It is the best detangler I have used since AG Conditioning Mist, my all-time favourite.

Silicone-free, it totally eliminates tangles and acts as a deep conditioner. Apparently, it is great for maintaining hair colour too. I actually went out and bought a second bottle as I have been using it as a daily moisturizer.

This product has most definitely been added to the “Best Products I’ve Discovered This Year” list.  Can’t say enough good things about it!!  Anybody with normal/curly/coarse/damaged/colour-treated hair NEEDS THIS in his or her arsenal. A major score.

Curl Keeper Softens Rough Dry Hair

Another great product for deep conditioning hair. If you are prone to flyaways, you need this in your hair regime. A great hair tamer with amazing reviews, I was super excited to try this.  I used after washing and air-drying my hair (do not rinse out after applying). My hair was left very soft, and did not feel weighed down at all. Completely non-greasy, this would be a great product to increase your hair health.

If you suffer from any sort of breakage, treat yourself to a trim and start using this each time you wash your hair. This product is a miracle-worker. Promise.

That concludes my round up of Curl Keeper’s products. I’m thrilled with this line. I can safely say it’s one of the best lines I’ve reviewed since starting this blog. I knew the line was impressive when a curly-haired redhead stormed the event and bought every product in the line while proclaiming that they were the best products she’s ever used and no longer hates her hair.  WOW. *Slow clapping*
