Spring Essentials You Need Now

I’m loving all of the new spring trends this year. The Fashion Gods are looking upon us favourably with their colour picks of the year (Pantone’s Rose Quartz and Serenity), and cool casual vibes thanks to all of the awesome running shoes and trainers that are hot right now.  I hope these trends last forever!!

I thought it would be fun and helpful to pull together my spring favourites that I’m really feeling. So, here are my picks for the top spring essentials that take any wardrobe from “meh” to “WHERE DID YOU GET THAT?”

Trench Coat

Invest in a nice trench coat. They are timeless, look great with everything and look great on anyone. Seriously, you deserve a Burberry trench coat.

Great Umbrella

Ok. I’ll admit that I HATE spending money on umbrellas, only to lose them five minutes after buying. Maybe buying a good quality umbrella will force me to hang on to it a little longer. I love models by Fulton, mainly because they have a little button that both opens and closes your umbrella for you. Yay laziness!

A Nice Watch

Michael Kors Mini Lexington Watch

I’m getting back into the watch game and wearing a few delicate styles that complement my existing jewelry. I’m downsizing the watches too. I’m finding the large, men’s wear look a tad played, and reaching for lady like styles like my Daniel Wellington Dapper Reading watch (discount code alert! Use code “STYLEDOMI” at checkout on the www.danielwellington.com website and receive 15% off any purchase) and this great rose-gold Michael Kors option shown above that…if you squint hard enough…looks like a Rolex. SCORE!

Culottes

One of the biggest trends of the last few seasons, culottes are awesome thanks to their versatility. Are they long shorts? Are they short pants? Is it a skirt? Who cares! They look great and are universally flattering if styled well. A little on the short side? Hem them and pair them with a fitted top to elongate your frame.

Cool Running Shoes

Nike Roshe – LOVE.

Adidas Superstars and Stan Smith’s, Common Projects super cool styles, Puma’s Creepers, Nike Roshe‘s – all great choices to elevate a casual (or dressed up) outfit. I’m partial to styles in all white, but sneaks in monotone shades of navy and wine look awesome too.

Micropleat skirts

Micropleats

Micropleat skirts especially in Pantone’s colours of the year (Rose Quartz and Serenity) are gorgeous. They fall so beautifully due to the heaviness created by the extra fabric of the pleats and have such beautiful movement. Warning: save your cash for dry cleaning these complex suckers.

Gingham

Gingham is pretty synonymous with “spring/summer”, but this sweet pattern is back in a big way this year. I’m loving the larger print gingham I’m seeing everywhere which is a great way to breath fresh life into this perennial favourite.

Ruffles

I’m a total girly girl so ruffles are straight up my alley. They are fun and whimsical and look amazing outside when they are caught by a light wind. Try out a ruffly top and have someone follow you around the city with a fan to achieve that “model on a mountain top” look. Fans normally not included with ruffled pieces. ;o)

Exposed Shoulders

Ok. I love the look of exposed shoulders! I think it’s so sexy and feminine, and such a nice, on trend way to show off some skin as opposed to the usual cleavage flash or “death by Daisy Dukes”. Try out these awesome dresses matching exposed shoulders with high necklines.

Satin Bomber Jacket

Satin bomber jackets are a fresh way to ward off the chill of summer nights. I’ll be treating myself to this gorgeous blush pink, satin option from Coach which I can dress up by pairing with a summer dress, or dress down with a black boyfriend tee or tank top with ripped black skinnies. Yes – I fantasize about buying things and dream up cool outfits to justify adding to my burgeoning closet.

So, that concludes my picks for best spring essentials. Got anything to add? Let me know in the comments!

I want to try a micropleat skirt… but I feel like it would accentuate the hips?
Mine: You’re rocking it in your picture but you didn’t list it: a fab pair of shades! 😀

Sigh – I’ve exhausted my “Shade pics”. LOL! I’ll be sure to do a separate post! As for your hip question, most of these micropleat skirts are an A-line fit, which are super flattering, especially if you have curvy hips and want to downplay them. Not saying you are hippy, but in case you were wondering!

There you go with those damned culottes again! I call them high-waters or “floods” and I have a whole closet of them. I guess I am chic after all….

You make me laugh. A true “guy”. I have yet to encounter one who likes culottes! And for that, I apologize for the plethora of culotte posts.
