I think it’s pretty safe to say that I’m obsessed with Vyvian To. With hair that’s been every shade of the rainbow, and style so hot, fierce and unlike anything I’ve ever seen, she’s a force to be reckoned with. I have spent many an hour stalking her crazy amazing Instagram, a collection of beautifully curated style shots that will inspire me for years to come.
Picture it, Toronto 2015. A luxurious, $17 million penthouse in the Trump Tower has been transformed into a styling suite. A petite, blonde dynamo flits around the expansive living room in a backless black lace For Love and Lemons dress, pulling dresses and jewelry for the acting elite attending the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Not only is she dressing celebrities in outfits that look like they were made for them, she is supervising a group of young styling interns and overseeing the seamless flow of people from the viewing suite to the fitting rooms. She did all of this with flawless grace under fire. I was impressed.
Over the course of our week working together, I learned a lot from Vyvian. I learned tips and tricks on styling, photography and blogging. She was a blunt, firm, no-nonsense go-getter with an extremely soft side and infectious laugh. It was plainly obvious that this girl was going somewhere.
Vyvian and I have kept in touch since our fun week working together at TIFF and she very graciously allowed me to
find out how she got so amazing interview her.
Alright, Vyvian. Anyone can tell by looking at you that you bleed style. How did you get so awesome? Tell me a little about yourself?
I came over on a boat to Canada in ’92 with my mom. As a creative spirit, I am constantly inspired by my surroundings and people I’ve encountered. I’m a super busy body and I’m obsessed with street culture, fashion, travel, makeup and everything visual. Just the tip of the iceberg.
Honestly, I had no style before. I grew up in small town Niagara Falls and wasn’t exposed to fashion nor was it very accessible financially. My favourite places to shop before were Value Village and other thrift stores. My boyfriend likes to tease me about how much my style has evolved.
Wow. I cannot picture you ever not having style! Your instagram slaaaayyyyys. What’s the deal? How do you get such perfect shots?
No kidding! The shots of you in Mexico are stunning. So, you’re a stylist with a lot of experience. How did you get started in that field? The plan was to become a pharmacist but then I fell in love with visual arts and decided to focus all my energy on that instead. I’m like a sponge, I love to soak up everyone else’s knowledge, so naturally I started to push myself to connect with other people in the industry and volunteering my time.
Do you feel any pressure to look on point 24/7?
I do but 2016 is about giving less fucks. The way I’ve learned it is that if you just spend time getting to know/love yourself eventually you know what’s important enough to care about.
Ahh – “less fucks”. Couldn’t agree more. You inspire me…who inspires you, Vyvian?
Real people inspire me. Erin Stewart, Jenn McConville, Kathie Bramson and the list goes on. Of course, Kevin Luc inspires me. In fact, he inspires me everyday with his relentless work ethic, passion and authenticity. But then again I’m biased.
Who would be your dream client, past or present?
I don’t have a dream client. I just want to work with brands, people and events that allow me to do what I love most which is to create visuals through window displays, fashion and product styling.
