A few weeks ago, I received an Instagram DM from a girl wanting my thoughts on those chunky Dad shoes that many influencers seem to be obsessed with. That right there sparked the motivation for this post: 2018 Trends That Made You Cringe…that made you throw your phone in disgust and swear off Instagram and trends it births forever.
It’s safe to say that I am not a fan of the Balenciaga Triple S Shoe, a.k.a. Dad Shoe. Why? Well, there are a few things inherently wrong with this trend starting with the obvious:
- They are big and bulky. Most are white also, making them and your feet look even more ginormous;
- They draw the eye down to your huge Dad shoe-clad feet, creating the illusion that you are shorter and squatter, along with taking the focus away from your cute outfit; and
- The price! Fashion houses are officially punking us. Shame on you, Balenciaga!
This trend I find so ridiculous, that I can’t even entertain the idea of how it can be pulled off well. I’m sorry. I don’t care how cute your Zimmerman dress is that you styled with this footwear abomination. You’re still wearing $1500 sneaks that look the same as the ones my Dad got from Walmart for $29.
So, I did a poll on my Instagram stories asking which trends are the most cringe-worthy this year, and you all DELIVERED! Some I agree with, and some I love myself and would wear. I was dying from your responses though which I’ve listed below. Enjoy and Happy New Year!
This trend has been super popular for a few years now. From little cat-eyes to rectangular sunnies that look almost like slits, everyone and their dog has been wearing them.
Why you hate them?
- They don’t protect your eyes from the sun.
- You don’t like paying $600 for shades that…don’t protect your eyes from the sun.
- They make your head look big. LOL…
“Clear boots…no one wants to see your foot sweat and fog.”
Ooof. You all do NOT like this trend. I always found this look a bit too “stripper” for my taste. I myself, also hated how sad a person’s little, squashed feet look in them…for the whole world to see.
Personally, I loved this trend and pretty much kept Fashion Nova in business this year by ordering too many of them.
Maybe people don’t like their 90s look or the fact that they should stay in the gym. I dunno. I didn’t think they are too bad, especially styled well! Think cute sports bra, fanny pack or chunky sweatshirt.
The Dior Saddle Bag
Awww! I like the Dior Saddle Bag! Not sure if this latest It Bag is worth the $3K price tag, but it’s cute and comes in so many variations that you could easily find one you love. Personally, I would opt for the older version that was equally popular when it debuted in the late 90s.
Many of you hate its “kidney” shape. Admittedly, that made me laugh/cringe. Many of you also felt that seeing every single influencer sporting one was annoying as well.
“Tin Man” Highlighter…
…specifically highlighter on the tip of the nose and Cupid’s bow. I laughed so hard at the hilarious IG story responses you all submitted:
- “I HATE THAT TINMAN NOSE EVERY YOUTUBER HAS.”
- “What is the point of doing that?”
- “Nice glow ball nose.” OUCH.
- “I can see your highlighter from outerspace .”
- “Hello. My name is Any Instagrammer and I’m a Highlighter-aholic.”
I like myself a good fanny pack! A lot of you don’t. Maybe it’s the whole “Dad Fashion” thing.
I do recall a trip to DC and seeing some poor Dad wearing one that was too loose as it was the only way he could wear it around his, ahem, beer belly. It hung so low that it ended up looking like a jock strap. *Cringe*
Fanny packs are great though, seriously. You can walk around with free hands thanks to them, allowing you to buy a real bag! LOL – kidding!
It’s all in how you style one. Get one that fits snuggly around your waist! Pick one that isn’t too big either, and then go ahead and cinch up that hot dress, or add a little spice to that biker short outfit (see above), or my favourite – drape it across your chest!
Frankly, you guys schooled me on this one. I need to brush up on my fashion trends because I wasn’t aware that oversized suits were even a thing! Then five of you sent me the same picture of Lady Gaga rocking one at some event. I think she looked great….
Poor Gucci! From the bags to the clothing, many of you were not feeling the brand’s releases during 2018. Some of you didn’t like the “matronly look” of the suit dresses. Others hated the giant Double G’s on almost all of their bags. And one of you actually asked if the infamous and ubiquitous Double G belt “was super cheap and really afforable or something? Is that why everyone wears it?” Yikes. It’s not at $450.
The Double G belt is great, in my opinion. I love the look, especially belted around a wool coat. It’s beautifully made too, and I feel elevates most looks. Sadly, so do 2,154,789 other people.
If You Like It, Wear It and Love It
Well, I’m going to go ahead and wrap up this list of 2018 trends that drew the ire of many. Remember, just because some people don’t like the look of something, doesn’t mean you should too, or stop wearing something you genuinely like.
The world would be a pretty boring place if we all thought that way. Rock your Dad shoes, own those tiny sunglasses and remember to wear everything with confidence.
Now, excuse me while I go rock my Kardashian-approved biker shorts at the gym with the rest of the January masses. ;o)
